Brainstorming, approving and documenting ideas –

We’ve all been there: conversations and meetings that go round in circles, with no clear outcomes and no record or minutes to refer back to. Then, one week later, the cycle repeats itself from the beginning. It doesn’t have to be this way: In our two workshop rooms in Düsseldorf and Frankfurt, we immediately put our ideas down in writing – on the 15-meter-long walls with writable surfaces. So, after a meeting, the outcomes are clear for everyone to see. We can even post mock-ups and other documents on the walls using magnets. The result? Increased efficiency and a commitment to action, whether in team meetings or in customer workshops.

Most JP│KOM staff move desks at least twice a year. In fact, we regularly mix up teams for new projects and jobs – ensuring that our employees’ talents and skills are put to the best possible use for our customers.

JP│KOM has come up with novel ways to create the best possible work environment. For example, the cabinets in our Düsseldorf office also serve as work surfaces and noise barriers. One of the cabinet doors is covered in felt, while fabric-covered ceiling panels also keep noise levels down. Meanwhile, the other cabinet door has a writable, magnetic surface – making it easy to put up project plans and other useful items. The cabinets also allow staff to show off their unique sense of humor with witty sayings and sometimes nerdy drawings: while it may not be for everyone, here at the agency of the future, staff are given the freedom to spread their creative wings.

Cognis was JP│KOM’s biggest customer for many years. The company’s name is based on the Latin word “cognoscere” – which means to know or to learn. This was also reflected in their tagline: “We know how”. Almost from the start, JP│KOM worked together with a Düsseldorf-based advertising agency to create the firm’s internal comms, corporate comms and, later, to design its website, intranet and other media. In almost 10 years of working together, we successfully executed innovative projects and established monitoring. Using new ways of marketing and proactive communication, Cognis was able to significantly boost its value within just a few years. All the hard work paid off when BASF acquired Cognis – but the partnership didn’t end there: to this day JP│KOM continues to serve BASF’s Personal Care division and other businesses.

An international market leader is born

On October 1, 2011, the chemical companies BASF and INEOS launched the Styrolution Group as a joint venture. All Styrolution communication had to be developed from scratch within just a few months. A new culture with its own values and messages, and a new corporate identity had to be set up. Today, with a turnover of more than five billion euros, the company is the world’s leading styrenics provider. JP│KOM has been by its side from the start. In workshops with the extended management team who came together for the first time from four different continents, the basis for the collaboration was defined and initial ideas for the tagline“Driving Success. Together.” were developed. Styrolution is a JP│KOM customer to this day and continues to make an impact with its communication.

Finance doesn’t have to be a snooze fest

Interest rates, currencies, cash management and access to capital – topics like this are often the focus of the banking world. The challenge is getting prospective clients excited about otherwise dull numbers . As part of its growth strategy, HSBC Germany wanted to help German medium-sized companies expand internationally, especially in China and Southeast Asia. But what kind of stories would relay this message and touch the hearts of potential clients? JP│KOM developedthe story of a medtech company that wanted to build a production plant for its hearing aids on the small island of Batam near Singapore. What they would need was a partner to provide on-site support. Their search would lead them to HSBC. In fact, there is even an HSBC branch on the main street of Batam industrial park, where the team could help the medtech company overcome all the red tape it would face. JP│KOM invented this compelling story for HSBC – giving the facts and figures a human face.

Courage in consulting sometimes pays off

“It’s probably not even worth it traveling there…” – that was the JP│KOM team’s first thought when one of south Germany’s largest financial service providers invited them to a pitch. That’s because we were the only Düsseldorf-based agency asked to participate: a further four agencies from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg were invited, including the local market leader for consumer PR. One thing was clear: if we wanted to win, we had to harness all our creative strengths, speak to editors about concrete projects in advance, and work with them to develop proposals that really hit the mark. The team of the customer enjoyed the prepared illustrations and stories so much that they even asked to keep some of their work. A few days later, we received a call notifying us that JP│KOM had won the pitch.

Doch jetzt will keiner mehr aus dem kreativen Kraftzentrum weg.

In addition to awards, in the agency there are some trophies for heroic acts that didn’t necessarily end in success. Take the cuddly tiger in the center of this image, which was intended to be used as part of the global internal comms of a pharmaceutical company. But – following orders of the company’s headquarters – the idea was not realized. Nevertheless, the soft toy remains – as do the memories of the strong teamwork between storytellers, graphic designers and consultants, and one of the best campaigns ever developed by JP│KOM.
